Crushing on Saarinen

"The purpose of architecture is to shelter and enhance man's life on earth and to fulfill his belief in the nobility of his existence." ~ Eero Saarinen

If  you would have told me, even five years ago, that I would be lusting over the Saarinen Tulip table, I would have thought you crazy.  The idea of loving a piece of ultra-modern furniture was so out of my thinking.  My taste was more fussy then and has evolved into a true passion for sleek modern pieces mixed with traditional. I think that simple recipe will always give you a space that is interesting and chic. I love the sweeping, sexy lines and would pair it with upholstered [perhaps Louis XVI] chairs to offer some warmth to the chill of the table.

When Andrew and I were first married and lived in Boston, we had this amazing farm table custom made.  I remember Andrew running his hand over the table and remarking how our future children would someday do their homework there.  Adorable, I know. Fast forward some years and sure enough this is the setting for afternoon snacks, school work and family dinners.  I love the memories this table has given me but my heart is yearning for that marble Saarinen. {sigh...}

These beauties were first designed by architect, Eero Saarinen in the mid-1950's for the Knoll company. They are as sought after today as they were then.  The "Tulip" series as well as many others designed by Mr. Saarinen are considered to be classic icons of modern industrial furniture design. They are a true investment piece and have made their way to my short list.
