Learning and Growing

"The only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work."  ~ Steve Jobs

The profession of interior design is generally competitive.  I have never completely understood this because the work is a physical realization of ideas provided by the designer.  They are thoughts come to life which is what makes this job so exciting.

Yesterday, a woman followed me on Instagram and then proceeded to take the photos of my home (my work) and use them as her own - one by one.  This pissed me off for a moment, but I had to step back and realize I cannot have it both ways.  Social media has become a useful bridge for business as it creates a way for us to show our projects to many.  Be inspired by another's work but don't blatantly steal it.  We are all in this creative world together.  There is plenty of room for everyone.  Why can't we just support, encourage and admire the hard work of each other?

I mentioned that I am reading Paul Arden's great book which is filled with simple yet powerful reminders for business and life in general.  I loved this page, in particular, as it pertains to the creative professional.

Paul writes,

"Do not covet your ideas.  Give away everything you know, and more will come back to you."

"...The problem with hoarding is you end up living off your reserves.  Eventually you'll become stale.  If you give away everything you have, you are left with nothing.  This forces you to look, to be aware, to replenish.  Somehow the more you give away, the more comes back to you..."

Have the best day ever!
